This recently published book written by two railwayman well known in the IRSE but neither being signal engineers but effectively representing our customers from operational safety and driving perspectives.
It gives a good history (almost all the current level crossings date from legal obligations when the particular railway was first built- dividing someone

Sounds like there was very nearly another accident at Ufton; this time the railway's fault.
