2006 Q4 DEGRADED MODE- INTERNATIONAL RAILWAY - oxfordjack - 26-09-2010 Hope it is helpful. And, please comments it. The question is: Question 4 An international two-track high-speed railway uses a transmission-based in-cab signalling system. A frequent service is provided by train operators from two different countries and there are some language difficulties, although drivers are expected to be bi-lingual. a) Describe a suitable degraded method of operation which will ensure the safe operation of the railway in the event of a complete failure of the transmission-based signalling system affecting 50km of route. [15 marks] b) Briefly describe any additional equipment or facilities which must be provided in order to facilitate your chosen degraded method of operation. [5 marks] c) What additional risks are introduced as a result of your chosen degraded method of operation? [5 marks] RE: 2006 Q4 DEGRADED MODE- INTERNATIONAL RAILWAY - Peter - 28-09-2010 I am not sure that you have really answered the question asked. I think it was looking for a detailed description of your chosen method of degraded working when the system has failed. You have given a list of things that could be done in various forms of degraded working. Similarly in part b you have listed things that may be associated with various methods of degraded working rather than giving those that are a pre-requisite for the system that should have been described in part a. The things that you put in c may be problems, but as there is no description of the system, this cannot be ascertained. Even if all of the words that you put down were relevant to the question asked, I think that the answer would be a bit short. I would expect there to be a bit more detailed description of each of the "features" of your system. I hope that is helpful, if not the sort of comment you were hoping for.
