Funtion testing

Hi there, have not been on for a while, the question I am bout to ask I am not sure whether it is applicable to this section of the forum so kindly re-post to the correct if not.
What is the route from mod5 up to function tester and what is the timescale roughly (million dollar question?) Many thanks in advance.

It very much depends on:
a) your previous experience b) your aptitude c) getting a good range of experience d) having someone to mentor you. If we assume that you'd been an installer for a good number of years, mod 5 ought to be reasonably straight forward and you ought to make a good assistant rather than being "wet behind the ears" whenit comes to practical site work. If you were lucky enough to be on a major scheme and thus spend all day, everyday out testing and get a variety of work (new locs, old locs track circuits, points, signals / AWS / TPWS, relay circuits, SSI functioning etc.) then perhaps after a year you might do the 3C course and become a cable tester. Provided that you use that skill a bit but also still have the opportunity to do mod 5ing, then perhaps in a further year you would do the 3C course and move on to this work. The danger is that you then get all that type of work, without the opportunity to progress and that is why the work environment is so important. If you are lucky you might be ready for a mod 4 course in about another year and then you'd need a period of mentorship. Actually nowadays you really need to have both 3BL and mod 4 to be a broadly useful function tester. But, as I think you realise, you have asked "how log is a piece of string?". Certainly you need to be part of a well run team with a flow of good work and the right people to learn from.
