Point / Switch Position

Dears,

I have one doubt in Switch / Point Operation.

Assume a switch is started operation from its present position. Before completing the operation, its power supply disconnected or failure by any means.

Now the point is not in normal or in reverse.

What is the position of tongue switch ? it will be in middle or it will be go back to its originated position ?

Kindly clarify.

It will be where ever it was when the power went off. If there is no power, what could have sent it anywhere other than where it was at that moment?

It depends on the machine/switch arrangements but usually (almost exclusively), as per Peter's statement. As it is safety critical, we cannot presume it does anything else but fail to complete its operation, although in practice, dependant upon where it fails, it could complete.

Suggest you ask maintenance to show you a machine and explain how they work. One of the IRSE text books does too. There is tons of information on the Web too but Wikipedia has almost nothing.
