Point / Switch Position

It depends on the machine/switch arrangements but usually (almost exclusively), as per Peter's statement. As it is safety critical, we cannot presume it does anything else but fail to complete its operation, although in practice, dependant upon where it fails, it could complete.

Suggest you ask maintenance to show you a machine and explain how they work. One of the IRSE text books does too. There is tons of information on the Web too but Wikipedia has almost nothing.
