There is now a proposed (but not yet confirmed) date for the YM Half Day Seminar and Review of 2011 Exam; 26 January 2012
Hence for those whom attendance would be practicable, suggest pencil the date in the diary.
For those who are unable to attend, do remember that you can via this website (or my contacting one of us privately) get us to raise issues on your behalf. Such things might be
a) feedback re exam study material supplied
b) feedback re exam booking arrangements
c) feedback re exam centre on the day
d) feedback re module questions form & content (particularly re mod 1 & 3 which changesd a bit for 2011)
e) seeking clarification re a specific question (i.e. what was expected / interpretation- not specifically to your particular attempted answer!)
f) feedback re results advise
g) suggestions for future changes which might be considered etc.
The flyer for the event can be downloaded from the Younger Members page of the main IRSE website

Is the seminar and review going to be repeated outside of London?

Afraid not but I have suggested to the IRSE that the Exam Review really ought to be recorded and made available for downloading seeing as there are large number of previous candidates and prospective students that realistically cannot attend a London event. Not sure whether this will happen, but I intend to make my notes avaialble soon afterwards, as I have done for the past few years.

any idea if there will be any comms representative on the panel this year? I understand that with so few taking the exams this is not seen as a priority, but last year I was unable to get the questions i had answered.

I don't but it is a good point. I'll try to at least find out in advance who will be attending and ideally see whether it is possible to get a comms representative.

PJW,
As an aside, not meaning to hijack the thread, it would be useful for more YM events/reviews etc., to be held in the Midlands, North or further afield. I realise something was attempted a few years ago and numbers were lower but that would be expected. The exam events mostly have decent turn-outs.

To be honest the exam events are almost always in what I (currently sat close to the Thames) regard as the Midlands: Derby, Walsall, Rugby.
The YM annual seminar in 2011 was Swindon, 2010 London, 2009 York and 2008 in Glasgow and 2007 I think was Birmingham. I have recently suggested the possibility of Manchester for 2012 and I think this may be given serious consideration.
The Exam Review continues (even without the pub) until 19:30 ish; realistically trains continue out of London far later into the evening than out of other places so I don't see much possibility of moving this particular event anywhere else particularly as need also to persuade examiners to attend. I suppose city centre Birmingham might be an option, but as far as I know there hasn't been an active Study Group in the city for a decade to form a nucleus and help organise it- perhaps it is "chicken and egg", yet I got the feeling that the group started in Derby last year wasn't in the end sustainable....

I spoke to Colin Porter today and asked about the method for broadcasting the London papers and whether this could be extended to the exam review. He said that they were in the process of trialling a less bells and whistles system for this and they were sorting out some events to trial it on. He said that the exam review might be a suitable thing and he undertook to take this forward as a suggestion to those dealing with the trial.

PJW,
Fair points. I would love for an IRSE section to be started centred on Derby. That would allow specific tailored events including YM seminars/exam-reviews.
Indeed, the study group peetered out. I guess the biggest issue was the niche of attendees where a broader group would be far more beneficial and probably long-standing.

Hi,
Would it be possible during or outside of the exam review to have a look at what would have been expected for Module 2 this year if speed signalling was taken as the perferred signalling type? Living in Victoria, Australia and the 160km/h line speeds with 2 minute headway was not possible with speed signalling. I think it could be an interesting discussion as to what measures should be taken, particularily in an exam scenario for these figues and it does make you think about the operations options available to you as a signalling engineer.
Would be great to see other thoughts on it.
Thanks
