Working my way through the syllabus I came across this subject. Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong section, perhaps train protection?
Understand and explain:- Single line working systems
There is no mention of it in the study guides. I found 2012 past paper question 7 which has some relevance.
"Fully describe a signalling system which allows for the safe use of a single line section" 15 marks.
"When the system you have described for a single line operation suffers complete failure, describe a process to allow the continued safe operation of trains. What are the key hazards, risks and how might these be addressed"? 10 marks.
The problem for me was the first part of the question seems ambiguous.
Does it mean a double track with one line blocked for maintenance, object on line etc so other line is used bi-directional with use of pilotman + ticket system?
Or does it mean an actual single line only railway?
I looked at the second part of the question, "single line operation suffers complete failure", I was thinking along the lines that would the pilotman suffer a "complete failure"?
Therefore I'm assuming that they are asking me to describe a signalling system that can be applied to a single line railway.....so I chose RETB.
Please review my answers and comment please.
I wasn't entirely sure about "key" hazards but had a stab at it.
Many thanks
