Good evening all,

I would like to introduce myself to the wider IRSE Exam candidate community as I have decided (very recently and probably just in time for 2011...) to sit Modules 1 and 5.

I have a decent grounding in Railway Signalling having spent 7 years maintaining S&T kit in South and West Wales. I have recently taken a Project Engineering role with NR, so have set myself a mid-term goal of achieving those all important letters to gain credibility in my new role.

I'm particuarly interested in communicating with like minded people in the Swindon (and west of) area in respect for studying for Module 1. In fact if anyone has anything resembling a decent study plan for either Module 1 or 5 I'd be more than keen to take a look....

Well yes, you have left it rather late but I do know others who just managed to apply to sit the exam by the deadline and have now recognised that they need to get down to some serious study.

Have you registered for the Mod 5 event in about a months time in Walsall; if not, why not? BTW, it looks as if we may have persuaded the powers that be to relax the "full PPE, all orange" policy for the training school which I know was acting as a disincentive for some.

We have not got a study group running in this area this year - we had a joint Bristol / Swindon group last time - most of the interested people seem to be taking a year out! That said, I know that there are several who still keep their hand in with a view to getting going again next year.

This forum is principally to get question attempts reviewed and commented on, rather than to be a teaching facility, so please feel free to have a look around and submit any work for feedback.

In particular the London Study Group will be sitting a Module 7 mock paper in 10 days time and a Module 1 mock paper about a month later. If you want to have a simultaneous attempt and then submit your effort then we can include it as a "long distance entry". One of our regular attendees comes from Swindon, so if you can wangle getting to Victoria Coach station area by 17:00 (need to allow at least 30mins from Paddington- perhaps a bit more for the next month whilst Edgware Road to High St Kensington is closed) then you'd be welcome to join us for the mock exam(s) and /or the debrief session the following week.

As far as a plan is concerned then I suggest you need to get a feel for the exam by looking at the Study Pack, the exam Syllabus and the past papers. Hopefully you have the experience you need and already have knowledge of the subject area (otherwise I don't think you'll make it for 2011) and so what you need to do is get stuck in straight away at practising answering questions. You'll find a fair number of other people's attempts and associated feedback comments in the relevant section of this website to give you an idea of how to approach.

I would like to add a couple of comments. Well done for wanting to sit the exam. It will help you broaden your horizons and employers like to see engineers that have passed it.

On thing though, full membership is not automatically gained with the passing of the exam. Equally, membership can be obtained without the exam!
